Plateau Of Lasithi....

Overview

The Plateau of Lasithi tour is a unique tour that nobody forgets. The plateau is known for its picturesque windmills. In the 1950s and 1960s, the plateau was one of Europe’s first wind farms. In plateau, there were about 10-13 thousand windmills that pumped the groundwater, with which the inhabitants were drinking their crops. Also, the main road that encircles the Plateau passes through most of the villages. On the main streets, the visitors will admire many tourist shops with traditional pottery and textiles. As well as cafes and taverns with excellent food. Most noteworthy is that, Lassithi Plateau is more widely known for the Dikteon Andro. It is the most important cave of antiquity in Crete. It is located in the village of Psychro. In that cave, Rhea gave birth to Zeus, the father of the gods of Olympus.

  • Seli Ambelou

The most remarkable set of windmills that survives in Crete today is located in Seli Ambelou in the Lassithi Plateau. It is situated at the northern entrance of the Plateau and it is the "trademark" of the area. Today there are 24 windmills left (originally they were 26). Seven of them are south of the street that enters the Plateau and the rest are on its northern side.
